A widespread redistricting effort impacting the Fulton County School System is facing scrutiny from parents, who recently united for a public meeting at the nearby Alpharetta High School.
The district noted that the most recent maps largely stem from community feedback, a recent FOX 5 Atlanta report said. Top school district officials insist the proposed changes need to happen now because enrollment and capacity imbalances in north Fulton County elementary and middle schools continue to linger.
“The result is a reduced number of potential families impacted, and changes for high school boundaries were significantly limited," Scott Brown, a spokesperson for the district, told FOX 5.
Despite this, some families, including those from the Sterling Brooke neighborhood, said they do not feel like the decisions are being fairly applied. Resident Krupa Mehta noted that the current proposal uproots years of planning and impacts families who moved specifically to their current homes just for a targeted school for their children.
"The Fulton County rezoning guidelines provide that geographic proximity is the biggest factor and for our community, Alpharetta High School is only two miles away and we are being put into Centennial High which is over five miles away," he told FOX 5.
One more meeting for redistricting input for south Fulton County took place last Thursday, the report said. The first read of the plan before the board will take place on Nov. 8, with final action on Dec. 15.
If redistricting is approved, it will go into effect for the 2023-24 school year, the FOX 5 report said.
