Tri-City High Athletic Director Kenneth Miller is fighting a possible suspension after being captured on video grabbing a student who was believed to have brought a gun on school grounds.
This comes months after the reported Aug. 20 incident, where Miller can be seen on video confronting an unidentified student believed to be in possession of a gun.
"During that process, we located guns. We saved lives," Miller told FOX 5 Atlanta.
On the day in question, Miller said the principal called him to the office and asked him to investigate reports that some students had brought guns on campus. According to FOX 5, eyewitness reports and police bodycam footage show the girl was “belligerent and aggressive,” with things turning physical after she smacked Miller’s hands, knocking his phone to the floor. At that point, Miller grabbed the girl, fearing for his own safety.
A loaded gun was found in the backpack of the girl Miller is alleged to have grabbed, the report states. Miller told FOX 5 he located a second gun on campus that day, though it is unclear if the same girl was in possession of the second gun.
According to the report, the school district is seeking disciplinary action because Miller admitted to grabbing the student. An internal investigation into the incident found Miller’s conduct had been in violation of both the Fulton County Board of Education policy and the Georgia Professional Standard Commission’s Code of Ethics for Georgia Educators. While the district initially moved to terminate the coach, they have since switched to seeking a 20-day suspension.
