Lorela Cubaj, a senior forward for Georgia Tech, returns for the 2021-22 season after averaging a double-double for the Yellowjackets last season and being recognized in a list of the top power forwards.
Cubaj was named to the 2022 Katrina McClain Award watch list by The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, according to a release from Georgia Tech.
“Cubaj will open the 2021-22 season as one of 20 power forwards named to the 2022 Katrina McClain Award watch list,” the school said in the release.
Named after the two-time All-American and 1987 National Player of the Year, the Katrina McClain Award recognizes the top power forwards in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball.
“From the University of Georgia to Team USA, Katrina McClain was a standout power forward,” John L. Doleva, president and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame, said on the NCAA website. “To be named to the McClain Award watch list is a tremendous honor and we’re proud to recognize these tremendous student athletes. As we launch our fan voting component tomorrow, we encourage fans to cast their votes alongside our distinguished selection committee.”
Cubaj led the Yellowjackets in blocks last season and carved their names in the record book with 909 career rebounds to rank fourth.
She is the reigning ACC co-defensive player of the year, and has an honorable mention in the 2021 WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches’ All-America.
