Up-and-coming Atlanta Hawks guard-forward Kevin Huerter earned a contract extension from the team.
A Hawks press release issued by the Hawks said the three-year veteran swingman’s extension will start next season but didn’t disclose the terms.
Travis Schlenk, Hawks president of basketball operations and general manager, views Huerter, whom Atlanta nabbed with the 19th pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, as an integral part of the franchise’s future.
"It was important to our group to secure Kevin as a part of our team moving forward,” Schlenk said in the release. “He’s developed into a versatile, two-way player who can fit any lineup and can play minutes all over the perimeter. We are excited his future is in Atlanta.”
According to the Hawks, Huerter, who formerly played for Shenendehowa (N.Y.) High School and Maryland Terrapins, is Atlanta's current team leader in total minutes logged at 2,126 and steals.
Last season, Huerter produced a line of 11.9 points, 3.5 assists, 3.3 rebounds and a team-best 1.2 steals.
A member of the 2019 NBA All-Rookie Second Team, Huerter celebrated his extension by dining out, a nod to his tendency to keep things simple, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
“I had to remind a lot of people in the building they’ve got a lot more money than I do. ... Everybody’s obviously happy,” he told the publication. “We’ve got a good group here.”
