Fulton County Schools has scrapped plans for a mask-optional campus.
According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Fulton proposed a mask-optional learning hub at the former site of Crabapple Middle School in Roswell. Planning for the mask-optional campus occurred as the delta variant and the state’s low vaccination rate drove up COVID-19 cases, AJC reported.
Fulton announced it would not proceed with opening the campus after it failed to catch on with sixth- through eighth-grade families, AJC said.
"Parents protested a Georgia school district's mask mandate," AJC's Susan Hogan said in a Sept. 1 tweet. "In response, the district proposed a mask-optional campus. The district has now dropped that plan due to a lack of interest. Meanwhile, protests continue.’’
According to AJC, a district statement said, “To date, less than 10 families committed to the learning hub, a number too low to warrant a viable program option. Therefore, FCS will not move forward with this learning option."
AJC reported that masks are required in all of the district’s more than 100 schools. Fulton County Schools has more than 90,000 enrolled students.
