U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has declared her intent to spearhead an impeachment hearing against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. This development arises amid allegations of mishandling border security, especially in light of a surge in illegal border crossings.
In a post by Greene on social media, she said: “I’m proud to have led the charge to IMPEACH Secretary Mayorkas for months in the House of Representatives. Before the House left Washington for Christmas break, I forced a vote on my impeachment resolution that put every member on the record. Unfortunately, some Republicans joined every single Democrat to block the resolution and save Mayorkas’s job. I reintroduced my resolution the very next week and pulled it only once I was guaranteed we would impeach Mayorkas in January. Well, I’m happy to report that the first official impeachment hearing for Secretary Mayorkas will be taking place next Wednesday!”
According to Reuters, a Republican-led House committee is preparing to intensify efforts for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, scheduling a hearing on January 10 to address these allegations. Approved by Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, Mayorkas has promised full cooperation with the investigation while overseeing border affairs. The impending impeachment hearing has drawn criticism from DHS spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg, who Reuters reported as condemning the impeachment effort.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates told The Independent: “In fact, right now, instead of joining the Biden Administration and members of both parties in the Senate to find common ground, Speaker Johnson is continuing to block President Biden’s proposed funding to hire thousands of new Border Patrol agents, hire more asylum officers and immigration judges, provide local communities hosting migrants additional grant funding, and invest in cutting edge technology that is critical to stopping deadly fentanyl from entering our country.”
Fox News reports that illegal migrant encounters at the U.S. southern border saw a significant increase, exceeding 302,000 incidents in December 2023. This surge set a new record for a single month, surpassing all previous monthly totals and contributing to a first-quarter tally of over 785,000 encounters since the start of the fiscal year on October 1. This marks an unprecedented high for this period. In response, Texas officials have been distributing migrants nationwide, with one recent instance involving a plane-load arriving at Chicago Rockford International Airport in Illinois on December 31st.
