From December 31, 2022 post.
Shortly after 9PM Thursday night, Quint 83 responded to reports of a fire alarm in an apartment building on Westside Parkway near Encore Parkway. When they arrived on scene there was no signs of fire showing from the outside of the building. With little information to go off of, no audible or visual alarms activated, and no sprinkler activation, they continued to investigate. When the crew arrived on the third floor of the building they found multiple residents in the hallway. As they continued down the corridor another resident rushed towards them and stated that the smoke alarm had been going off in a neighboring apartment and that he had seen smoke coming from their front door.
The crew made their way down to the apartment to investigate further. They did not feel any heat when checking the door for signs of fire. They could hear the crackle of fire behind the door and upgraded the call for a full alarm. Meanwhile they began to evacuate the floor, and with no response at the door, they made entry into the unit and found heavy smoke and a working fire. They quickly searched and confirmed that the apartment was empty and went to work to knock down the fire. With Engine and Truck 81 and Engine 86 on scene the fire was fully knocked down and all hot spots extinguished. Alpharetta Fire Corps Volunteers assisted on scene with rehab and refilling air bottles for fire crews. Fortunately there were no injuries and the fire was contained to the one apartment unit.
Due to burst pipes from the previous weekend's severe cold, the buildings fire sprinklers were not functional at the time of the fire. The building was on fire watch, and with neighbors being alerted by the smoke alarms, and a quick response, this fire was kept from spreading and causing more damage or injuries. Smoke alarms save lives.
