From December 20, 2022 post.
The arctic blast expected to hit Alpharetta starting Thursday night and running through the weekend will bring dangerously low temperatures. While temps in the teens and windchills in single digits are no big deal if you hail from places like Fargo or Buffalo, it is unfamiliar territory for those of us who have spent our lives below the Mason/Dixon Line.
Here are a few important facts to help you get through the days ahead.
• Dress in layers. Layers of loose-fitting, lightweight clothing will keep you warmer than one bulky sweater or coat.
• When the temperatures drop below freezing, limit your time outside.
• Below freezing temperatures increase the risk of frostbite. Be sure to wear gloves and hats and keep skin covered.
• If you can’t feel your fingers, toes, ears, or nose, or they appear white or grayish-yellow pay attention! These are warning signs of frostbite. Get inside to a warm room and soak in warm water.
• If you are outside with someone who can’t stop shivering, is having trouble remembering things, seems tired or listless, or who seems to be talking funny, they may have hypothermia. Get them to a warm room and wrap them in blankets.
