Grab your parka and grab your hat ‘cause winter is coming just like that! Current forecasts are predicting a prolonged arctic blast hitting Alpharetta this Thursday through the weekend, with temperatures dropping into the teens and wind chills in the single digits.
Now is the time to begin making some simple preparations like turning off the water feed to outside faucets and insulating water pipes in uninsulated attics or basements to prevent pipes from freezing and breaking. If you plan to be out of town for the holidays, leave your heat turned on, and if you plan to be home consider leaving the heat at the same setting overnight as you do during the day. Your heating bill may be a little higher, but you will reduce your risk of water damage from burst pipes.
If you have not already done so, be sure to turn off your outdoor irrigation systems. Aside from the potential for broken pipes, water that ends up on sidewalks and streets will freeze and pose a risk for injury and vehicle crashes for which you could be liable.
Finally, there is the chance for wintery precipitation in our area overnight Thursday and Friday morning, so keep a close eye on local weather forecasts. Even if we see only rain, the cold temperatures could lead to patchy, black ice on area roads, bridges, and overpasses.
