The following statement is being issued in partnership with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) regarding the recent plane crash in Alpharetta.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________
On Oct. 31 at approximately 1:15pm, a Beech BE58 crashed into an area of wooded terrain near Big Creek and Rock Mill Park in Alpharetta, Ga. The flight plan indicated two people were on board, flying from Jekyll Island, Ga to Dekalb-Peachtree Airport. The plane was cleared for approach into PDK, descended and then went off radar. A preliminary review of air traffic control recordings shows the pilot made no distress calls. The NTSB arrived on scene Tuesday morning and has recovered the wreckage and moved it to a separate facility for further investigation. Investigators are also reviewing radar and weather conditions at the time of the accident. The NTSB encourages anyone who may have witnessed the crash to email witness@NTSB.gov.
The NTSB will release a preliminary report in 2-3 weeks that will contain all the factual data collected up to that point. Media can find that report on Twitter: @NTSB_Newsroom when it is published. The probable cause of the crash and any contributing factors will be in the final report, which can take from 12-24 months to be completed.
The Alpharetta Department of Public Safety has received several inquiries regarding the names of the victims involved in the plane crash and is committed to providing accurate information in a manner that is timely and appropriate based upon available, verified facts. At this time, we can confirm that, after an extensive search of the area, no survivors were located. We are not able to provide positive victim identification at this time, and any such identification will be provided at a later time by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy.
The Big Creek Greenway was temporarily shut down while the NTSB conducted their investigation. With the NTSB investigation now concluded, the Big Creek Greenway has fully re-opened for public use.
We appreciate everyone’s patience while the investigation was conducted.
