Miller County Sheriff, Richard Morgan, has been suspended after being charged with sexual battery and violating his oath of office.
Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) signed an executive order calling for the chief judge of the Pataula Judicial Circuit in southwest Georgia to appoint an interim sheriff to serve in Morgan’s absence, according to a recent report by Fox 5 Atlanta.
Acting on the recommendation of state Attorney General, Chris Carr, and two other Georgia sheriffs who reviewed the case, Kemp imposed a 60-day suspension on Morgan, Fox 5 reported.
Morgan was arrested Aug. 10 by Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents who had been asked to investigate sexual misconduct allegations involving the sheriff, with the charges stemming from "an incident that took place while on a 911 call."
Morgan ran against the incumbent sheriff in 2020 and ended up with the job despite losing the election when then-Sheriff Scott Worsley died from cancer the week before election day.
