Former Georgia First Lady Sandra Deal has passed away at 80 after a long battle with breast cancer.
According to a recent report by FOX 5 Atlanta, Deal passed away at her home in Demorest with her husband, former Gov. Nathan Deal, among those at her side.
"We have lost a wife, mother and grandmother who loved us unconditionally, as we did her. She blessed us, taught us and enriched our lives," the Deal family said in a statement to FOX 5. "Our family knew this day was coming, and we are grateful that it gave us the opportunity to enjoy as much time with her as we could in her final months.
Deal was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 and had a tumor removed. Not long after that, she began chemotherapy for several months, but family members said the cancer eventually metastasized into brain cancer.
Georgia-born, Deal grew up surrounded by educators and attended Georgia College and State University where she received a bachelor's degree in elementary education and later a master’s degree, FOX 5 reports.
According to the report, Deal was remembered in a public Celebration of Life Saturday at Lanier Technical College in Gainesville. The gathering was live-streamed.
