An investigation into South Fulton Mayor Khalid Kamau's City-issued credit card is pending after an audit revealed some "questionable" purchases, a recent FOX 5 Atlanta report said.
This comes as South Fulton City officials confirmed the firing of Anthony Kerr, the City’s procurement officer, who was recently escorted out of the City office buildings by South Fulton police. Police Chief Keith Meadows noted that this was standard practice.
Though the council members said they hope nothing comes from the investigation, they felt the need to take the step as a matter of their commitment to transparency, the FOX 5 report said.
"The transactions were of concern," Helen Willis, District 3 City councilwoman, told FOX 5. "We thought it was best to just send them over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Fraud Unit to review and render an opinion."
No timeline has currently been set for the investigation, the report said.
Citing the integrity of the investigation, Willis refrained from providing details about the transactions in question.
"We have strict financial protocol on how they’re supposed to be used, and they are not to be used for anything that is of personal nature," Willis said, referring to the City-issued credit cards.
Kamau has blasted the ongoing probe as a partisan “smear campaign about credit card charges that were authorized by city staff,” the release said.
All South Fulton City Council members will have their City-issued credit cards audited as well, and the council is considering hiring an internal auditor, the report said.
