Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens wants Atlanta to make history once again, so he has officially announced his push to have the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) take place in the ATL.

Dickens, a Democrat, is bidding to bring the national convention to town for the first time since 1988, a recent FOX 5 Atlanta report said.

"Atlanta has been home to history’s movers and shakes for decades, and now it’s time to help make more history," he said in a May 14 tweet. "I’m excited to announce that Atlanta is competing to host the 2024 Democratic nominating convention. Atlanta continues to remind the country that we are truly moving forward, and it’s only fitting that we help America do the same by doing everything in our power to bring the 2024 Democratic National Convention to Atlanta, Georgia."

The DNC was last held in the city more than three decades ago when Michael Dukakis was the Democratic presidential nominee, the FOX 5 report said.

Dickens announced he'd be formally submitting the bid to bring the DNC to Georgia during the state Democratic Party's recent gala, the report said. DNC officials noted that Atlanta is one of at least eight cities that have been invited to bid for the event.

During his speech at the gala, Dickens called Georgia a "battleground state," highlighting Democratic victories during the 2020 election when candidates from the party won both U.S. Senate seats in runoffs and President Joe Biden's narrow defeat of then-President Donald Trump, the report said.
