Atlanta Hawks forward-center Onyeka Okongwu will be honored by Atlanta-area nonprofit Kate's Club as the 2022 Mourning Glory Gala honoree.
The organization works to empower kids and teens who have lost an immediate family member or caregiver, the Hawks reported in a release.
"Onyeka has demonstrated a desire and commitment to impacting his community," the Hawks reported. "His work has focused on serving young people and honoring nurses, a nod to his mother, Kate, who has been a nurse for many years."
The event, held at the Loews Atlanta Hotel, will feature dinner, an open bar, auctions and live music, the Hawks reported. Over 300 people will be in attendance at the yearly fundraiser.
Okongwu lost his older brother in a skateboarding accident in 2014, the Hawks reported. Since the tragedy, Okongwu has honored his brother's legacy by placing increased value on his own life. Okongwu's said his experiences make him well-suited as an ambassador for Kate's Club.
In his two seasons with the Hawks, Okongwu, a graduate of the University of Southern California, has played 98 games with 10 starts, averaging 6.3 points on .672 shooting from the floor, with 4.6 rebounds, the Hawks reported.
