Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis sees a conflict brewing if Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacy Abrams were to be elected governor.
Abrams is the only democrat vying for the title of governor against Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, whom she lost to in 2018, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.
"If Stacey Abrams is elected governor of Georgia, I just want to be honest, that will be a cold war between Florida and Georgia," DeSantis said during a press conference regarding infrastructure. "I can't have Castro to my south and Abrams to my north, that would be a disaster."
DeSantis' statement drew a clarifying response from DeSantis' press secretary, Newsweek reported.
"The governor was simply making an analogy to the stark ideological differences that underpinned the Cold War," DeSantis' office told Newsweek. "If Stacey Abrams wins the governorship of Georgia, we know that her approach to leadership will involve more heavy-handed government, taxes, and bureaucrat influence. In Florida, Governor DeSantis will continue to keep Florida free and put citizens first."
While there are rumors about DeSantis running for president in 2024, he has not made a formal statement confirming this, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. He is, however, running for Florida governor again in 2022.
