In honor of National Nutrition Month, the Atlanta Hawks and State Farm recently hosted an event at William Walker Recreation Center to encourage youth to become junior chefs, with the aim of teaching them about healthy eating, the origin of food, and family.
The food was prepared by Hawks' and State Farm Arena's Executive Chef Joe Schafer, a recent release on NBA.com said. He spoke to the youth in attendance about the importance of good nutrition and choosing recipes that have healthy ingredients.
"It was great being a part of our Jr. Chef Program with State Farm for National Nutrition Month," Schafer said in the release. "Through these efforts, we aspire to continue to educate youth on making healthy decisions that will impact themselves, their families and the Atlanta community."
Under Schafer's tenure, the Hawks and State Farm Arena reportedly received the top food-and-beverage score in the NBA's 2018-2019 Fan Loyalty Tracker Program.
Other activities were available at the event as well, the release said. In addition to learning about different countries, the youth created three dishes that represented those countries and also took home recipes to encourage continued healthy eating choices.
Hawks forward-center Onyeka Okongwu was one of the speakers at the event, the report said.
In fighting food insecurity locally, the Hawks and State Farm have teamed up to open seven Good Neighbor Clubs in the Atlanta area, the release said.
