University of Georgia football recruit EJ Lightsey suffered several gunshot wounds in Fitzgerald, his hometown.
Lightsey was shot in his back and shoulder, then transported to a hospital in Albany for medical treatment, UGASports reported. Lightsey's injuries, while not life-threatening, were serious.
A teammate reported that Lightsey was conscious and able to speak following the shooting, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.
"Prayers to EJ Lightsey and his family," DawgNation said in a tweet.
Another man, Maurice Robinson, was shot in the same incident and ultimately died, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Two men, 42-year-old Andre Pierce and 23-year-old Jiquavious Wilcox, were arrested in relation to the shooting on multiple charges, but the case is still under investigation, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
After helping bring the Fitzgerald High School football team to a state championship last year, Lightsey is scheduled to enroll in classes at the University of Georgia this summer, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.
At 210 pounds and 6-foot-2-inches, Lightsey was among three linebackers signed to the 2022 class by the Bulldogs, who are currently the defending NCAA champions, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.
