After a five-year absence, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will have a football player in the Senior Bowl with Tariq Carpenter.
The defensive back was invited to participate in this weekend's game, which gives NFL prospects the opportunity to practice and play under NFL coaches, Georgia Tech reported on their site. Each of the 32 NFL teams will have staff members on hand. Detroit Lions staff members, headed by Dan Campbell, will coach the American team.
"We would like to welcome @GeorgiaTechFB Tariq Carpenter @RiqSanity to the 2022 @Reeses Senior Bowl," Senior Bowl officials said on Twitter. "Tariq will suit up for the American Team."
Carpenter played five seasons at Georgia Tech. He started 41 games and ended his collegiate career with 223 tackles and four interceptions, Georgia Tech reported.
Four other Yellow Jackets have been invited to several postseason showcase games this year, Georgia Tech reported. Offensive lineman Devin Cochran and defensive back Juanyeh Thomas are playing at the East-West Shrine Bowl tonight in Las Vegas; wide receiver Kyric McGowan went to the Tropical Bowl on Jan. 15 in Orlando, Florida; and defensive back Tre Swilling was invited to the NFL Players Association Collegiate Bowl this Saturday in Pasadena, California.
This is the highest number of Georgia Tech players to garner such honors in one year since the 2013 season, when eight Yellow Jackets earned all-star invites, Georgia Tech reported.
The Senior Bowl begins at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
