Fani Willis, the Fulton County district attorney and prosecutor tasked with the Donald Trump investigation of his post-election behavior, recently presented information that could result in more charges, and further examination.
Willis is calling on Georgia officials to charge the former president with trying to overturn President Joe Biden’s presidential election win in the Peach State, where Biden won by about 11,000 votes. A decision regarding the request is projected to be made as early as the first half of this year, Fox 5 Atlanta reports.
"I believe in 2022 a decision will be made in that case," Willis told the Associated Press. "I certainly think that in the first half of the year that decisions will be made.”
One of the most tangible pieces of evidence includes a phone call between Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, which took place Jan. 2, 2021. Other forms of evidence include a review of documents and interviews with former officials, pieced together by the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.
A Trump spokesman tried to undermine the findings and deemed the investigation a “witch hunt.” Although she has not yet asked for a special grand jury for the trial, Willis has hinted she is considering making the request to strengthen the investigation through a subpoena.
The U.S. House committee is currently preparing a briefing detailing the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. According to Attorney General Merrick Garland, the Justice Department "will follow the facts wherever they lead."
