South Fulton police are looking to crack down on big rig drivers that take detours into residential neighborhoods.

Atlanta’s FOX 5 reported that many truckers have been ignoring signs posted along the Cascade Road Corridor much to authorities’ frustration.

South Fulton Lt. Roxanne Shoemaker fears for the worst if 18-wheelers continue to diverge into areas with homes.

"If an accident happens you've got 50 some thousand pounds versus 5,000 for a car," Shoemaker told FOX 5. "You know it makes for a pretty horrific wreck when it does happen."

Though motorists cut through Cascade Roads' residential area while traveling between I-285 and Fulton Industrial Boulevard, it’s against the law for truckers to do the same.

According to SFPD, the trucks that rumble through the neighborhood present a quality-of-life issue.

"Big Rigs, you know, they are heavy, they are loud," Shoemaker said, FOX 5 reported. “It's just a nuisance for them to be traveling on the roadway, and there is a reason why we have these signs up is to prevent this from happening because they are tearing up the roadways.”

Police point the finger at mostly out-of-state truck drivers who claim to know nothing about the signs.

According to FOX 5, South Fulton Public Works will soon install high profile flashing regulatory signs indicating trucks are prohibited.
