Georgia officials have reopened Interstate 16 after shutting it down following an accident that damaged a bridge overpass.

On July 16, both directions of traffic to Interstate 16 were restored after demolition crews cleared a damaged bridge overpass, according to ABC News.

"I-16 is now open in both directions. Great work @GADeptofTrans!" the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) wrote in a July 16 Twitter post.

According to a press release from the DOT, on July 15, a trailer crashed into the Treutlen County bridge on I-16, causing the bridge to shift off its supports by six feet. Officials closed both westbound and eastbound traffic while DOT officials assessed the situation.

Lt Col. William Hitchens III of the Georgia Department of Public Safety said that investigators are still looking into the accident, but added that there will some changes coming. Hitchens has not specified what changes specifically will be made.

"We've already identified some things, but we want to finish the investigation before we make a final decision on exactly what we charge the driver with and traffic charges and things that go along with his commercial license," Hitchens said, according to CNN News.

Work on the bridge was originally expected to take roughly one week to complete, but was finished much earlier.

“Really, this team is getting it done a lot quicker than we ever thought it would,” Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said at a conference with reporters, ABC News reported.

I-16 is the predominant route used by people traveling from metro Atlanta south toward Macon and proceeding to drive to Savannah and Hilton Head. The Treutlen County bridge is relatively 150 miles away from Atlanta to the southeast.

The driver of the truck that collided with the bridge was not seriously hurt in the accident.
