Attorney General Chris Carr has highlighted the ongoing efforts of Georgia’s Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit during Human Trafficking Prevention Month. He encouraged Georgians to learn about human trafficking signs and support survivors.
“Georgia is leading the nation in the fight against human trafficking, and we’re forever changing lives as a result,” said Carr. “We’re grateful for the support of Governor Brian Kemp, First Lady Marty Kemp, and members of the General Assembly as we seek to expand our Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit so we can rescue and assist even more victims. With each new arrest, indictment and conviction, we continue to send a strong message that Georgia’s children are not for sale.”
The unit was established in 2019 with support from Governor Brian Kemp, First Lady Marty Kemp, and state leaders. It includes prosecutors, investigators, analysts, and a victim advocate working statewide with law enforcement to address human trafficking.
Governor Kemp’s Budget Report proposes expanding this unit to Augusta and Macon. Currently based in Atlanta, it has secured 54 convictions and assisted nearly 200 children since its inception.
Last year, notable prosecutions included life imprisonment for an individual involved in trafficking a 16-year-old girl recovered in Greene County. Other cases involved securing convictions related to trafficking minors in Fulton County, DeKalb County, Houston County, and Dougherty County.
Individuals trafficked or convicted while being trafficked can petition for vacatur or record restriction through forms provided by the Attorney General’s Office.
Carr’s unit conducted 45 training sessions last year for various audiences. Training resources are available online through First Lady Marty Kemp’s Human Trafficking Awareness Training. Additional resources are offered by organizations like the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Blue Campaign.
